"Origami"
is the art of paper folding. The Japanese word "ori"
means to fold and "gami", a form of "kami",
means paper. It is believed that paper folding originated about
the 6th Century in China where paper was invented. It spread to
Japan where paper was folded for religious ceremonies and where
the first known written instructions were recorded. In Japan the
art flourished and became the worldwide recreation that it is
today.
Jan Fodor folds origami and presents them in the form of jewelry. Where most enthusiasts work with six inch (16cm) paper, Jan's forte is folding in paper sizes from three-fourths of an inch (4cm) to three-and-a-quarter inches (12cm). Her creations result in critters a quarter inch (8mm) in size to one-and-one-half inches (4cm) small. All forms are made with Japanese handmade paper called "washi". 'Washi is made using centuries old techniques. As the various origami forms are folded, they are glued in place so no unfolding occurs. Her earrings and pins are brushed on the outside with three coats of acrylic lacquer to insure waterproofing and permanence of shape. "Origami by Jan", as these delightful pieces are called, are comfortable to wear and last for years.
